Army Headgear Change Kicks Off April

Apr 01 2011

Defying Conventional Wisdom

The Army has released a statement this morning that they are, once again, changing the standard headgear for Soldiers. Following their decision last year to change from greens to blues in their dress uniforms, today saw an announcement that there is a change to headgear as well. In an homage to the days of horse cavalry, the black beret will be replaced by a dark blue Stetson:

No, not really

No, not really

This move challenges public (and rival military branches) perceptions that the Army has no sense of humor.

A New Era

From the announcement:

“We figure the Stetson will be popular with the troops,” said Sgt. Maj. Bob S. Stone, Army Uniform Board headgear task force president. “It’s been a while since we have changed the headgear, so it’s time. Plus a Stetson is functional and down right American.”

But reminiscent of the controversial switch from the garrison cap to the black beret, the Army faces opposition from one community deeply opposed to losing its special identity with the Stetson – the Armor branch.

“Why in the heck are they doing to us what they did to the snake-eaters?” asked one officer familiar with the board’s deliberations. “If you ain’t Cav, you ain’t ought to be wearing a Cav hat. That just ain’t right.”

But the sheer functionality of the wide-brimmed American-classic Stetson won over the majority of the board.

“You can keep the sun out of your eyes, the hat won’t melt to your head on a sunny day, and female Soldiers can tuck long hair under a Stetson a lot easier than with the current beret,” says Stone. “Plus we’ve already gone back to blue jackets for the service dress uniform. The Stetson actually completes the look.”

A vibrant discussion of the move is taking place on Facebook, with many commentators outraged at the change and the rest fully cognizant of what day it is.

The last line of the press release should have been enough of a clue, but who reads that far in an article?

The Army’s official adoption date of the Stetson will be April Fool’s Day, 2012.

Look forward to seeing this in email form without the last sentence in a few weeks. MOAA will be lobbying the Navy to follow this lead and return to their Cocked Hat roots.

Obviously kidding.

Classic – LCDR Fyffe’s 1870 Cross Country Walk

Oct 08 2009

“The wisest have the most authority” – Plato

A Myth, But a Fun One

Sometimes we stumble across old stories about the military that are virtually impossible to corroborate, but make for amusing reads. This story, about a lieutenant commander, J.P. Fyffe, details his exploits and attempt to make a statement about a bad policy that was in place at the time. In August of 1870, as the story goes, LCDR Fyffe was given command of a frigate stationed outside of San Francisco. The policy of the Navy during this era was that the cost of any move one had to make to a new assignment must be handled by the service member and then the costs would be reimbursed after they arrived. After LCDR Fyffe, who lived in Connecticut, attempted to get money for a train ride across the country and was denied, he decided to make the journey entirely on foot and report back to his ‘superiors’ his progress on a daily basis.

Luke Air Force Base Flyover Complaint

Jul 14 2009

A True Story for Once…

BotB Verdict

Average Number of Times Received Daily at MOAA: 3

Executive Summary

Since we had a less than happy flyover article last week, we thought we’d reach back into the archives and bring out a feel good flyover story from our classic bilge folder. Luke Air Force Base, located just outside of Glendale Arizona, a rapidly growing part of the country, is the largest F-16 base in the world. With some 200 F-16s operational on site, they are the training center for hundreds of pilots making their way up the ladder. The convergence of a large civilian population springing up around an old military installation (building started on the base in 1941) has caused some friction. Noise complaints are common, but one in particular became a national story when a resident of nearby Peoria sent a letter to the editor of the Arizona Republic in June, 2005. The fallout from that letter has become a favorite pass around in the email world, and for once it is a very true (and touching) story.

Tiger Woods Tribute to the Military

May 27 2009

An excellent tribute from an excellent golfer…
BotB Verdict:

Average Number of Times Received Daily at MOAA: 2

Summary

An email that is circulating quotes the speech that legendary golfer Tiger Woods made during the inauguration ceremonies of President Obama. Woods is the son of Lieutenant Colonel Earl Woods, who retired from the Army after a long career that included two tours of Vietnam as a member of the Green Berets. The text of the speech cited in the email is accurate, although there has been some instances of political commentary in most versions, either for or against his not mentioning President Obama. There are a few improbable statements in the most common email cited here, but the speech itself has not been altered. Full story after the break…

April Fool’s Day Highlights

Apr 08 2009

Every year it gets better…

BotB Verdict: Excellent April Fool’s Day Year

Summary

Every year on April 1st, the world takes a day off from reality and takes the time to show the ones they care about how much they mean to them by playing practical jokes and generally trying to trick them. The tradition is at least hundreds if not thousands of years old, depending on who you talk to about it. Some place the origin to when the Gregorian calendar came into wide use and those that stuck to the old system were considered fools. Other stories say that it started when King Charles IX changed the start of the French year from April 1 to January 1. Those that refused to change their ways still celebrated April 1 as the start of the new year. Whatever the true origin of the non-holiday, it has become pervasive world wide as a day of fun.

Some of the Best of 2009

Google’s AI Blogger – Google introduced a new program they had been working on ‘for several years’ that was the first ‘global-scale neuro-evolutionary learning cluster’. Basically an autonomous blogger and writer that created content based on what is going on at any given moment in the cyberverse. CADIE, as she is called, produced her own homepage full of esoteric content and horribly designed web pages. It was an interesting look into the strange side of the internet.

Upside Down Youtube – For a while, all videos at Youtube were flipped vertically and all the comments were upside down as well.

Qualcomm’s Wireless Convergence – Qualcomm introduced the next generation of wireless integration, which combined species of animals to show just how far the iPhone style gadget application and integration can take us. Images of the wolfpigeon, the sharkfalcon and the crocodeagle poked fun at the wireless expansion and provided great imagery.

UK’s Guardian Switches to Twitter Only Service – After 150 plus years in print, The Guardian announced that they were switching over to a tweeter only format. Another example of an AFD joke taking on the fads of the day.

Switzerland Calls for Mountain Cleaners – This one was just weird, but funny in its own way. Take the evaluation to find out if you meet the requirements to join the mountain cleaning team for some good laughs.

Humor Site Funny or Die acquired by Reba McEntire – As a regular visitor to FoD, this one got me worried for a second until I realized what day it was. I’ll stick with Will Farrel over Reba for my comedy thank you.

Car & Driver Reports Obama Urges Chevy & Dodge to Ditch NASCAR Funding – A Car & Driver prank story said President Obama is asking Chevy and Dodge to pull their sponsorship of NASCAR events to help save money with the restructuring. This one got hot fast and C&D had to deliver a statement that it was just a joke. The elements involved here of budgets, the President, NASCAR and the auto industry make this story the most likely to be spread as fact over the next couple of weeks.

Historical AFD Pranks

If you would like a good laugh and have some free time on your hands, check out the Museum of Hoaxes list of the top 100 April Fool’s Day hoaxes here.

My personal favorite is from 1998, when Burger King published an ad for their new ‘Left-Handed Whopper’, which spun out of control for years afterward and local restaurants were asking for it frequently or demanding a right handed burger for equality.

Motivations

Fun, nothing more. One day a year to take a break from reality isn’t asking too much really. But who wants to bet we see the Car & Driver one minus a disclaimer making the rounds in a few weeks? First one to forward that email to me gets a MOAA key chain and pocketknife!
