Survival of the Fit—Tips for a Healthy Thanksgiving
Nov 25 2009
Happy Thanksgiving to all!
I love Thanksgiving—the cold weather outside, the warm cozy indoors, the smells of home cooking, and the festive sounds of laughter and joy in the air as family and friends gather to enjoy each other’s company.
There is however, a part of me that dreads this time of year. You see, I have this personal, internal struggle of how to balance fitness and food during the holidays. It’s really more a survival of the fetus-like dilemma – where I’m hoping against hope that ‘fitness’ wins out over food.
The challenge is how to balance the holidays without focusing too much on what I eat or feeling guilty for taking advantage of all the wonderful food that I often deprive myself of the rest of the year.
There are actually small things you can do to stay fit and healthy through the Thanksgiving weekend and through the New Year. The small tweaks can add up to big payoffs.
Try These Tips Tomorrow for a Healthier and Happier Thanksgiving:
• Get up a little earlier and get active. Exercise or do some sort of physical activity first thing in the morning to jump start your day. You’ll get your body going and be motivated the rest of the day.
• Drink plenty of water during the day. Instead of reaching for food, reach for the water. You’ll stay hydrated and you will eat less because your stomach will feel fuller.
• Eat less, but eat often. Don’t skip meals so you can fill up or save room for Thanksgiving dinner. Eating smaller portions during the day keeps your metabolism burning and you’ll eat less at dinner time. Get everything you want in one trip—don’t go back for seconds.
• Pace yourself and enjoy what you eat. Take your time eating. Savor your food, family and friends. Put your folk down every so often to enjoy the moment and the time with others.
• Limit the sweets. Enjoy but don’t overdo—portion control applies in the desert area as well.
• Leave the leftovers. If Thanksgiving is at your house, get rid of all the leftovers by giving them to your guests to take home. Or, if you are the guest, leave the leftovers!
